Credit repair can be a real challenge if you do not understand how to go about doing it. In saying that, you can easily do a Google Search on Credit Repair Resources and learn a couple tricks or two in no time - right? I don’t know if it is that easy though. As a matter of fact it is downright confusing to most. Did you know that the Federal Trade Commission suggests that if you are in need of credit repair, it is probably best if you fix it, yourself? This way you avoid becoming a credit repair scam statistic. And, who wants to go through that? No one I know.

In order to begin your credit repair process yourself, you will want to read as much as you can on do-it-yourself credit repair and you rights as a credit consumer to effectively repair your own credit successfully. This can be accomplished by finding a trustworthy credit repair blog or free credit repair website. You may even want to download a credit repair ebook or credit repair kit. These products usually run anywhere from $10-$100 depending on the information. Spending $100 is quite ridiculous in my opinion no matter how bad your credit score seems to be. Once you download a credit repair ebook, simple follow the step by step instructions on repairing your credit.

Most credit repair ebooks and kits will include pre-written credit repair letters which you can then send to the credit bureaus to dispute any inaccurate or negative credit info on your credit report. This definitely speeds up your credit repair process and raising your credit score rather quickly.

Also in my opinion, credit repair ebooks and kits are much better than traditional credit repair “how to” books because the ebooks can be easily update with the ever-changing consumer credit laws where a paperback or hardback credit repair book cannot. Most credit repair ebook distributors will send you the credit repair updates via email for free. I don’t know any traditional book publishers that do that - do you?

Remember: If a Credit Repair eBook or Kit sounds to good to be true, it usually is, so be mindful while engaging in you self credit repair search. Good luck in your future self credit repair endeavors.

Credit Repair Done Right

If you want your credit repair effort to succeed you need the right credit scores and credit reports. The wrong approach can put you on the path to lower credit scores and frustration. The information you are about to read may shock and amaze you. But if you do it right you will have a great advantage and avoid some serious frustration.

The Scores You Need

Do you know what your credit scores are? Are you sure? If you are going to begin a credit repair effort and want to benchmark your starting point you should do it right. Here’s the problem. The credit scores sold by the credit bureaus are not the same scores lenders use. Huh? That’s right; the credit bureaus created their own credit scores to cash in on the market opportunity. If you muddle through the fine print at the credit bureau websites you will discover the disclaimer.

Avoid Those Imitation Scores

This unfortunate fact applies to the army of credit resellers on the web as well. There is another problem with bureau scores. You may think that even an imitation score will serve your credit repair purposes, believing that your progress should be reflected in some way. I’m sorry to say that these scores do not behave the same as your real lender scores and are almost sure to result in disappointment.

MyFICO, the Right Score for Credit Repair

If you want your real scores you have to go to MyFICO.com the website of Fair Isaac Corp, the creator of the FICO score. The current cost of scores is about $50 for all three combined. A bit pricy, but it’s the only game in town. And for those intrepid credit repair warriors that want more detail, Equifax does in fact sell a FICO score. Unfortunately, they only make it available for your Equifax report, and you definitely want all three scores for your credit repair effort. Also, they use an older release of the formula, so the results will vary.

But Nix on their Credit Reports

So, head on over to MyFICO and get your scores right from the source. It’s the right credit repair choice. But there is another twist. Although MyFICO is the only way to get your scores, the credit reports they provide are the pits. For some strange reason MyFICO blocks out virtually all of the account numbers and offers only about half of the information that your credit repair effort will need. So get your wallet out again because you will have to buy your reports elsewhere. It takes few bucks to get your credit repair underway, but it’s worth doing it right.

The Right Reports

Although the credit bureaus peddle poor credit score products, they offer excellent tri-merged reports, full of all of the detail you need for your credit repair project, and when it comes to credit repair every detail matters. I’ve taken you down a twisty road so far, and I’m sorry to say that there is one more twist on this journey before we arrive at our goal.

Credit Repair and the Right Deal

Here is the final twist. The credit bureaus want to sign you up for monthly membership, hence the offers of free credit reports in exchange for joining this or that service. If you are not careful your free credit report will end up costing you hundreds of dollars. If you want to join a monthly service, that’s another story. There are benefits. But if you just want to get your credit repair underway and want a good cheap tri-merged report you have to look very carefully.

Hiding in Plain Sight

TrueCredit.com offers the best cheap one shot tri-merged report on the web. But it’s not easy to find, so don’t just run off to TrueCredit and think you’re going to find it clearly advertised. In fact, it’s about the last thing that they want you to buy. But it’s there, hiding in plain sight. Well, almost. Scroll down the home page. Look under the main picture for small print in light gray that says that coverage is not available for residents of New York.

Credit Repair Treasure Hunt Success

Right under that line you will find another line that says that you can also get your 3-bureau credit report without the free score. Click on the words, without the free score. It’s a credit repair treasure hunt. How hard can they make it? Wow. Make sure to uncheck the two boxes where they try to sell you two other ridiculous items that have no use for your life, not to mention your credit repair efforts. Now you have the tools you need to get started. Good luck!

Credit Repair Services

With the influx of people who are worrying about their credit scores and their finances in general, it comes as no surprise that there are companies out there who are offering exclusive services to clean up or repair your damaged credit. While it may seem like such a simple solution to your credit woes, be warned - some of these companies are not what they claim to be.

Credit repair services claim to repair bad credit marks on your credit history. What you need to find out before committing to a service is how the company goes about making such repairs. There is a big difference between the items on your credit reports that make up a poor credit score and then there are items on the report that are genuine mistakes. If the company tells you then can remove all bad marks - walk away now. No one can remove information that show poor credit activities. To do so would be illegal.

On the other hand, you have the right to look at your credit report and file a request to remove any misinformation. If the credit reporting agency claims they can repair inaccurate information for you, know this - you too can do the same thing for free. All that is involved in this procedure is analyzing your credit report and noting all mistakes. You then have a right to file a complaint with the credit bureau that provided the report. The credit reporting bureau is then obligated to investigate the information from the original creditor within a reasonable period of time. If the creditor responds that the information is indeed correct, your report will not change. If the credit reporting agency gets no reply from the creditor, the incorrect information will be removed from your credit report.

While you cannot remove poor credit activity from your credit report, you can ask your creditors to work with you to improve the information being reported to the credit reporting agencies. They may not all be cooperative but it is worth a try in order to improve your credit score.

For those people who simply do not want to go through the trouble of repairing their own credit reports, there are reputable companies who can do the repair work for you. Be sure before you commit to any one company, be sure they are a company in good standing with the Better Business Bureau and will work with you to truly help you repair your credit score and not just take your money. A good first red flag - if the credit repair agency denies you can do the above-mentioned steps on your own - know that they may not have your best interests at heart as they are not being honest with you. Also be aware and clear of how much it will cost to work with a credit repair company before signing on the dotted line.

Here are some other points that may raise some alert flags:

· Speak to you in terms that seem confusing and “over your head” with no real concern if you understand

· Do not tell you honestly about what your obligations or rights are concerning your credit.

· Tell you that they can repair all bad credit marks on your report.

· Last, but not least, if a credit repair company tries to convince you to apply for a new identity using an EIN number for credit purposes. This is very illegal and is not repairing anything.

Credit repair has its share of detractors, and perhaps for good reason. The FTC campaign against credit repair scams makes perfect sense. But for every consumer that has been disappointed by a questionable credit repair scheme, there are so many more that have benefited from the service of a genuine credit repair professional. Is it time for the FTC to acknowledge the good guys in the credit repair industry?

The credit reporting system is not perfect. There is no debate about this. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) provides the legal process for consumers to correct errors on their credit reports and initiate a credit repair effort if necessary. How common are these errors? How difficult are they to identify and correct?

You may be aware of the often quoted Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) studies which conclude that three-quarters of all credit reports have errors. The Government Accounting Office (GAO) conducted a study of studies on the subject and also identified the severity of the issue. The real need for credit repair arises from the potential economic impact of these errors which translate into higher interest rates and less favorable terms for those affected.

To appreciate the need for credit repair you need only look at the numbers. Each of the three major Credit Reporting Agencies maintains data on approximately two hundred million Americans. Per the Public Interest Research Group studies, about one hundred fifty million Americans have errors on their credit reports. The PIRG studies conclude that although some of the errors will have little or no bearing on the credit classification of the consumer, a full twenty five percent of the errors are likely to result in outright denial of credit.

Twenty five percent represents fifty million people. As large a number as this is, it is only reasonable to extrapolate that there is an even larger group who suffer needless economic hardship from errors without experiencing outright credit denial. Between the two statistics are one hundred million Americans who may be paying premium interest rates as the result of errors; one hundred million Americans who may be paying higher mortgage payments, auto loan payments, and credit card payments. How far does the Fair Credit Reporting Act go to resolve this problem and aid or encourage the credit repair process?

The truth is that the Fair Credit Reporting Act does very little to mitigate the impact of credit reporting issues or support the credit repair process. The average person has difficulty reading a credit report, and beyond the face value of the information on the report lays the vast array of virtually inaccessible legal information that would facilitate their ability to manage the chore of credit repair. This includes the basic guidelines of the Fair Credit Reporting Act itself, reporting period limits, dispute rights, etc., as well as other legislation that may come to bear such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and individual state statutes of limitation.

The complexity of credit repair in and of itself should not be a problem. The tax code is no less difficult and we all manage to get our tax returns done. For that matter, most of us drive automobiles and have no clue about how an internal combustion engine works, much less how to fix one. The real problem is the public perception of the credit repair industry. Imagine if we were regularly persuaded that accountants were unnecessary; how would we get our taxes done? Or if we were told to stay away from auto mechanics; how many of us would be able to repair or maintain our automobiles adequately?

The accuracy of your credit report is important. Your credit score will determine the cost of every dollar you borrow, and its affect will determine the quality of your life. I understand the FTC campaign against bad credit repair operations. And I understand the importance of the media warnings against illegal credit repair schemes. But for all of the good intentions of the FTC, the result of their myopic anti credit repair attitude has been an enormous cost for millions of people that should have been encouraged to seek professional credit repair help.

For all of the bad publicity surrounding credit repair schemes, there are many excellent professional credit repair businesses. The services provided by these credit repair professionals are no less important than services offered by any financial expert and should be sought out by anyone in need of guidance. As important as the FTC warnings against abusive practices may be, it is time for them to acknowledge the good guys that operate in the credit repair field.

The Foundation of Credit Repair Success

It’s time to take stock. Where are you today? Are your finances stable enough to make timely payments on your obligations from this point forward? Credit repair can completely transform your credit and even put you on the path to long term wealth. But to be a good candidate for credit repair you must be able to keep up with your existing commitments. There is no point in making the effort if you are still slipping backward each month. If you can commit to timely payments from this point forward you are a candidate for genuine credit repair success!

Understanding the Nature of Credit

Credit repair success can be measured by the changes in your credit scores. Cleaning up all of the erroneous reporting issues from your credit report is essential, but in the final analysis it is your credit scores that will tell the tale. Credit scores are the result of everything on your report. As important as eliminating negative items may be, the presence of positive credit is even more important. In short, good credit scores require the presence of open and properly managed accounts. Managing your accounts for credit repair success is easy if you know how.

Your Accounts and Credit Score Optimization

As odd as it seems, you may make all of your payments right on time, for years on end, and still have awful credit scores. The good news is that a bit of knowledge can turn things around on a dime and lift your scores dramatically. There are two parts to this credit repair secret; type of credit, and account balances. When it comes to your credit scores not all credit is created equal. It is simple; mainstream credit cards, such as MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover are good. Store cards and consumer credit, such as furniture store loans, are bad. If you have store cards or consumer debt you should work on paying it off. Now, let’s chat about managing those good mainstream credit cards for credit repair success.

Revolving Account Management

If you don’t have any good open credit cards, open them now. If you can’t get approved for unsecured credit, just get a couple of secured cards. They are easy to get and you won’t be denied. Once you have your credit cards you are in a position to really get your credit scores moving in the right direction. All you need to do is get the balances under twenty percent of the cards capacity. If you have a five hundred dollar card get the balance under one hundred dollars and watch your scores take off. Conversely, you need to know that a balance near the card’s limit can knock as much as one hundred and fifty points off your score. If you have high balances, don’t worry. As soon as you pay the balances down your scores will pop right back up (just allow time for the creditor to report the new balance to the credit bureau).

Whipping Your Credit Report into Shape

Credit repair rule number one: Give yourself the benefit of the doubt! Don’t believe everything on your credit report just because it is in writing. If there is any chance a derogatory item is erroneous, dispute it! For goodness sake, it’s your credit and it’s important, so get pro-active, or hire a professional credit repair service to manage the process for you. There is plenty of evidence to support an aggressive approach to credit repair. Over seventy five percent of all credit reports contain errors. The majority of these errors cause consumers to pay premium interest rates on the money they borrow. Don’t be victimized.

Two Handy Credit Repair Tips

Once you get into the task of cleaning up your credit report here are two handy credit repair pointers that can help you out. First, legally, collectors are supposed to withdraw their reporting of an account as soon as they sell the account or return it to the original creditor, but they rarely do. Challenge all questionable collections. And, second, credit card issuers have been known to underreport credit card limits. This underreporting has the same impact on your scores as if you had run up your balance. Proofread your reports carefully for accurate credit limits.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Credit Repair Help

Reach out! If you don’t have the time to manage the job of credit repair on your own call a pro. A credit repair professional will review every single detail on your report. They will be able to identify your credit score optimization options, find deficiencies in your credit, and dispute all of the questionable derogatory issues in an experienced and efficient manner. Good luck with your credit repair project!
