Five Best Credit Repair Tactics
Filed Under Credit | Leave a Comment
Are you planning to make an effort at credit repair? Make sure to do it right. An informed effort will produce amazing results, and subtle details can make a world of difference. Take a bit of time to plan your attack and you will prevail. Here are my five favorite credit repair tactics proven to produce solid and significant results.
1. Don’t Wait to Rebuild Your Credit
If a stretch of hard times have left you with no open accounts it is tempting to postpone rebuilding credit until your credit repair project has borne fruit. You may think that if you wait until your credit is clean you are less likely to get denied. Unfortunately, the logic is flawed. Your credit scores will not recover if you don’t have active accounts. And new credit takes time to yield positive credit score results. If you put off opening new accounts you will be disappointed with your credit repair project. Now is the time to start rebuilding. Open two secured credit cards. Do it today. Once you receive them, use them, and keep them active. But be careful to manage the balances properly.
2. Manage Your Revolving Balances
The FICO scoring model places great weight on the relationship between your credit card balances and your card limits. This factor receives extra weight on accounts that are less than a year old. So if you have recently opened new secured credit cards as part of your credit repair strategy this issue is extra important. Your credit score will be rewarded if you keep your balance low, and conversely you will be punished if your balance drifts upward. Optimize your credit score by keeping your balances under 20 percent of the cards total limit. For example, if you have a three hundred dollar limit, keep the balance below sixty dollars.
3. Dispute Intelligently
If you are going to manage your own disputes instead of hiring one of the available credit repair services there are some caveats. Keep your disputes simple. The credit bureaus do not want to hear your story. Limit your communication to the bare minimum. If you have found an account on your report that does not belong to you, just list the account and say that the account is not yours. One more strategic pointer; don’t give up. If you do not get the response you want the first time, dispute again. This time state clearly that you are not happy with the first results and you demand that they have the creditor research the account. Stand your ground.
4. Learn Your Reporting Period Limits
When you review your credit reports and are planning your credit repair effort you must examine the reporting dates. Derogatory information, in general, can report for seven years. But there are exceptions and specific ways of counting the dates. Understanding the rules will give you the edge you need to succeed. Many people are not aware that the reporting period clock starts ticking on the date of the original default with the original creditor. Reporting periods never start with the reporting date of subsequent collectors. There are many cases where you will need to calculate your dates very carefully. Take nothing for granted.
5. Challenge Collectors
The most egregious offenders of credit reporting rules are collectors. You must examine all collection accounts as part of your credit repair effort. Don’t believe your eyes. This is a case where skepticism will pay dividends. Collectors buy and sell debt on a regular basis. Did you know that if a collector sells a debt to another collector or returns the account to the original creditor they are supposed to withdraw the account from your credit report? In fact, this rarely happens and non-compliant collections linger on your report for years depressing your scores needlessly.
And When in Doubt
If you are too busy to give your credit repair effort the careful attention that it deserves, just reach out for help. There are many legitimate credit repair services that will insure that every possible method of improving your credit is explored and implemented. Credit repair is a detail business, but you don’t need to be intimidated. Whichever route you take help is nearby if you need it. Good luck!

In years past, the credit repair industry was tainted by fly by night credit repair clinics and other credit fixing scams. Despite the need that many people had to get help with repairing their credit, it was hard to find a credit repair company they could trust.
Today, the credit repair industry has matured thanks to increased awareness and federal regulation. The keystone of this regulation is the Credit Repair Organizations Act, also known as CROA. Recognizing the value of professional credit repair services, Congress enacted CROA in order to define appropriate actions of a credit repair organization and to outlaw many of the practices typical of a fraudulent credit repair clinic.
While there are still some fraudulent credit repair organizations trying to take your money, by understanding the basic ideas of CROA, you can easily identify these scams and make sure you avoid them. Knowing what things credit repair companies are and are not able to do, will keep you from becoming a victim.
Below are three key points of CROA and what they mean to you as you are shopping for a credit repair company.
1) Credit repair organizations cannot charge fees for services before they are rendered
Most credit repair scams start off the same way. You are required to pay a large upfront fee, often times in the range of hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Then, after you have made the payment, the credit repair company does little or nothing to repair your credit and in some cases, simply disappears with your money.
To keep you from becoming a victim of this type of scam, CROA prevents credit repair companies from charging for services before they have been provided. If a credit repair company charges a set up fee, they cannot collect that fee until after the task of setting up your case has been completed. If a credit repair company charges monthly fees, those fees cannot be collected until after a month’s worth of services have been provided.
Keeping this requirement in mind is probably the most important thing you can do to avoid becoming a victim of a credit repair scam. Even today there are companies like Champion Credit Consulting and Credit Clean who will try to charge you $795 and $1223 before they have done anything to repair your credit.
2) Credit repair organizations cannot make incorrect or misleading statements
Preying on the naivety and lack of knowledge of people looking to improve their credit, many credit repair companies entice people with claims of improving their credit score 100 points in 60 days or removing bankruptcies from their credit reports. The truth is that while it is possible for each of these things to happen, no credit repair company can promise that they will.
In fact, no credit repair company can promise to remove anything from your credit reports because ultimately, it is up to the credit bureaus what items are listed on your reports. Disputing credit is not failsafe. There are cases where no matter what you do, a particular negative item will not be removed from your credit reports.
Any company that promises to increase your credit score or remove any negative items from your credit reports is violating the law. According to CROA, and the nature of the credit system, the best any credit repair company can do is promise to put forth a best effort. Just like in a court of law, a lawyer can promise to work as hard as they can, but they cannot promise that you will win over the jury.
3) Credit repair companies must inform you of your rights
The credit system is not easy and many people do not adequately understand their rights within the system. This lack of education makes it easy for con-artists to prey on the unaware.
So you do not get caught off-guard, credit repair organizations are required to inform all prospective customers of their right to order their own credit reports and their right to dispute the questionable information they contain. They are also required to inform you of your right to cancel your credit repair service within 3 days of signing up for no reason and with no penalty.
When signing up with a credit repair organization, CROA dictates that you should be presented with a disclosure statement titled “Consumer Credit File Rights Under State and Federal Law”. This statement describes the rights mentioned above.
CROA has changed the landscape in the credit repair industry and has been very effective in helping the FTC identify and prosecute shady credit repair organizations. Because of CROA, you can feel confident that your money will be well spent when you enlist the services of a legally compliant credit repair company.

FREE CREDIT REPAIR

Every consumer who uses credit has a credit record — and is it ever powerful.
Every time you apply for credit or a loan, creditors obtain your credit record to verify your worthiness. But, the use of these reports has broadened. Insurance companies have begun to use them to determine premiums or deny coverage. Potential employers may even want to check out your credit worthiness.
If you are hampered by a low credit score, you may do well to make use of credit repair service to improve your credit score.
Rising interest in credit scores
Today, a credit record is more than just a dry report on how many credit cards you have and whether you made every auto payment on time. Credit recording agencies often distill consumers’ reports into a three-digit number called a credit score — and that number alone can determine whether you get easy monthly payments or loan-shark rates. It’s not surprising that as credit scores become more important, consumers are taking more interest in these three-digit numbers. A high score saves you money, a low score costs you. This fascination with credit scores has led to more interest in repairing credit to increase scores.
Unfortunately, as the demand for credit repair rises, the opportunity for scams becomes more prevalent, says Marta Moakley, an assistant attorney general in Florida.
“As our economy becomes sluggish and debt levels rise, more people turn to companies that specialize in credit repair for help. Consumers need to be aware that there is potential for fraud.”
The need for such a service is obvious. Practically every consumer has inaccurate or outdated information on a credit report from one of the three major credit bureaus, says Steve Rhode, president and co-founder of Myvesta.org, a nonprofit agency that counsels people in financial crisis.
These errors can be costly, and it’s up to the consumer to get them corrected. The credit bureaus are not obligated to root out errors and provide accurate information. Their job is to record the information presented to them by creditors.
Call for help?
So, if your score is low or your credit report is inaccurate, what are your options? It’s like hanging wallpaper — do you call a professional paperhanger, or tackle it yourself?
The Fair Credit Reporting Act says consumers can dispute mistakes in their credit files for free. But it will take time. Correcting one error may average four hours, says Rhode. That includes applying for your credit reports, reviewing and highlighting errors, documenting the mistake, typing up your letter and mailing it.
Credit repair services offer, for a fee, to do this daunting legwork. They pull credit reports, review for errors and send out dispute letters along with documentation. They add professionalism. They save you time. Some promise to erase bad credit — 100 percent guaranteed. Others advertise they can remove bankruptcies from your credit file forever.
These repair services, however, don’t have any secret remedies for erasing bad credit. Neither you nor the credit repair service has the right to remove accurate and current information from your credit report. The bottom line is: Credit repair services can’t do anything for you that you can’t do for yourself, free.
The mysterious repair shops
Are credit repair clinics fulfilling their promises to improve credit scores? It’s hard to say. We contacted five credit repair clinics to learn about their guarantees and success stories, but not one was willing to talk.
The consumer service agencies were more than willing to talk.
Steve Baker, Director of the Federal Trade Commission in Chicago, says a prevailing myth about credit repair is that there are loopholes in the federal law that allows poor credit to be erased. It doesn’t exist.
He says that in the past four years the FTC has not seen a legitimate credit repair clinic. “It’s possible that these clinics are providing legitimate services to customers, but I’ve not seen it yet. When the law says that bankruptcy remains on your credit report for 10 years, just how can it be legally removed?” questions Baker. “And, later when you’re asked in a credit application if you’ve ever filed for bankruptcy, will you lie?”
He cites an example of one consumer who was told to steal his bankruptcy record from the county courthouse, so that the credit bureau could not verify its accuracy.
Dramatic? Yes. But it poses a good question — how are credit repair services removing bad credit?
“If the credit repair service offers guarantees within the Fair Credit Reporting Act,” says Steve Rhode of Myvesta.org, “then it’s doing the job. Credit repair services get sleazy when they promise to do a job that’s just not possible. They promise to remove accurate, but negative information.”
“Scams occur,” says Marta Moakley, “when consumers pay fees for services that are never performed, or the consumer is misled on the services provided. Too often the consumer can’t afford to lose this money.”
Worse yet, consumers have paid money upfront — and the company disappears.
“Credit protection and credit repair” scams are one of the top consumer complaints reported to the FTC. The actual dollar amount lost by consumers to these scams is difficult to calculate, says Baker, because many people are too embarrassed to complain. But, the FTC estimates the loss to consumers is easily in the millions.
“This is an equal opportunity scam. Everyone has a credit report; anyone can suffer from a poor credit history,” says Baker.
Steve Rhode knows of consumers who paid $400 to $2,000 for credit repair services. Do-it-yourselfers can expect to pay $30 for a consolidated credit report — a report that provides your credit history from the three major credit bureaus — plus the value of their time.
Finding a reputable company
You may still decide to go the credit repair service route. Here’s how to let your fingers cautiously do the walking through the yellow pages.
Do your homework. Research the company before your first visit. Contact the Better Business Bureau to see if the firm has had any consumer complaints. Check with your state attorney general’s office or other state consumer agencies to find out if there are any pending legal investigations. The FTC warns against relying on chambers of commerce or other trade associations where membership is based solely on a fee.
Know your rights. Credit repair services must follow specific guidelines from the Credit Repair Organizations Act, which are intended to protect consumers. You should receive an explanation of these rights before signing a written contract. Read them.
You should receive a contract with all of the following information:
The payment terms for services, including their total cost
A detailed description of the services to be performed
How long it will take to achieve the results
Any guarantees they offer
The company’s name and business address
Remember the grace period. The credit repair company cannot perform any services for you until you’ve signed a written contract and completed a three-day waiting period. You may cancel the contract without paying any fees during this period.
“There are no quick fixes in credit repair,” insists Moakley. “Common sense tells you that a third party doesn’t know your credit history better than you. Through contacting credit bureaus, making your own corrections, consolidating your debts and budgeting, you can improve your own score. You don’t need to pay someone to fix it for you. Apply that money toward your debt.”

The only guaranteed method to repair your credit is to pay off the old bills and get your derogatory balances to $0. “Well that isn’t very helpful” is probably what you are saying. Since none of us just have cash laying around to do that there are other things you can do that are guaranteed to increase your FICO score practically overnight and start rebuilding your credit.
